The Jordaan in AmsterdamThe artistic centre of Amsterdam, The Jordaan was built in the early parts of the 17th century. It was a district for the working class. Around the 1900’s it had a population of nearly 80,000. It was home to the famous 17th century Dutch writer Joost van den Vondel and photographer Breitner. It was also home to artist Rembrandt van Rijn who lived here because the rents were more affordable.

Nowadays, it is only home to some 20,000 people and has become the artistic centre of Amsterdam. Strolling through it’s streets you will find many little courtyards many of which are only open on national monuments day. Although not free, you will also find the famous house called home by Anne Frank.

The Jordaan in Amsterdam is also home to the Noorderkerk and several small museums. It’s a great place to stroll and soak in some old Dutch culture
